How to get to Romania

By Air

If you are flying into Romania from outside of Europe Otopena International Airport will most likely be your destination. It is located approx 16 km (10 miles) from Bucharest. You can find connecting flights to here through such airlines as Air France, Alitalia, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa and Swiss Air. British Airways has daily direct flights from London Heathrow to Bucharest that start from 94 pounds one way.

Romania's national airline, Tarom, flies from various locations throughout Europe.

Blue Air, a Romanian budget airline, flies into Banesa Airport which is approx 9 km (5 miles) from Bucharest. They fly from Milan, Rome, Torino, Paris, Lyon, Madrid, Barcelona, Maastricht Aachen, and Istanbul with plans to expand to other destinations throughout Europe in the future.

CarpatAir is another charter airline from Romania. It uses Timisoara Airport as its hub and flies to varius destinations in Germany, Italy, and has 2 flights a day from Budapest to Cluj. CarpatAir also flies to various destinations in Romania from Timisoara.

Another inexpensive way to reach Romania is through its neighbour's capital, Budapest with WizzAir. They have very cheap flights from London and other destinations in Europe. From Budapest you can then get to Romania by Train, Car, or hire a Chauffeur (Contact us for details)

If the above hasn't helped you on your way to discover Romania here are some other budget airlines that fly into Romania: Sky Europe, AlpiEagles, Cimber Air, Club Air, MyAir

By Train

Budapest, Hungary, is typically the gateway to entering Romania from Western/Central Europe. It is just over 7 hours to Cluj which is an excellent introduction to Romania and Transylvania. You can check fares and times with the Hungary Railways or Romania Railways

Romania is fairly well-connected with the European network and also offers direct trains from  Belgrade, Sofia, Thessaloniki, Istanbul, Chisinau, Warsaw, and more. The Romania railways also accepts Eurail and Interail travellers.

By Road

If you plan to rent a car when travelling to Romania you must present the vehicle registration, insurance, and your driver's license (foreign licenses are accepted) at the border. If you have not purchased insurance in advance it is available at most border crossings. If you are travelling from Budapest except a long wait at the border as many Romanians go to Hungary for cheap shopping. For maps and directions ViaMichelin is a good tool to use.

Buses to Romania are not widely used as there are many rail connections. Istanbul is the exception to this rule, buses are faster (approx 12 to 14 hours) and cheaper than the train (approx 18 hours).

If you would like to hire a private English-Speaking chauffeur to drive you across the border Contact us for more details.

By Water

Many river cruises along the Danube connect to Hungary, Germany and Austria. If you are interested in a excursion from the port please Contact us for more details.
