Only 50 km distance from the
Hungarian border. The new
fortress was built between
1763 and 1783 and played a
great role in the Hungarian
struggle for independence in
1849. It was here where the
Austrian supreme military
and civil power was handed
over to the Hungarian
rebels. The exquisite
architecture seen in the
buildings of the citys
square is the direct
influence from its
occupation of
Austrian-Hungarian in the
past. Most notable are the
City Hall and Cenad Palace
which justify the works of
the Architectural Era.
The Cathedral is the seat of
a Greek-Orthodox bishop, and
possesses a Greek-Orthodox
theological seminary and a
conservatory for music.
Definitely worth visiting
when in Arad.
