Countryside in BucovinaBucovina is a historical region in the north of Romania. It is currently split between Romania and Ukraine, after the northern part of the territory was occupied by the USSR after World War II.

Throughout history the territory of Bucovina went through a lot of changes, both in size and occupancy and after gaining its independence, Romania strived to incorporate this region of great significance to its history not only for being the heart of the Moldavian Principality in the early centuries, but also for the monuments of art and distinct architecture which remain proof of the greatness in Romania’s tumultuous past.

Painted Monasteries in Northern RomaniaThis county offers scenery of rare beauty; with its unique monasteries, part of the UNESCO world heritage monuments, each painted in a specific color: Voronet (blue), Humor (red), Sucevita (green), Moldovita (yellow), the architecture of the houses, the balneary resorts and cultural and natural heritage, Bucovina stands out when looking for a quiet place to retreat, go fishing or discover long lost traditional crafts, away from the madness and crowd of the big cities. The most common form of tourism practiced here is the religious one, thanks to monasteries such as Voronet, whose shade of blue is unique in the world thus the name ‘Voronet blue’ and also renown for the courage of its painter to use in the biblical reproductions traditional Moldavian Painted Monasteries of Bucovinamusic instruments; or Moldovita, one of the oldest religious establishments, famous among the other monasteries in Bucovina for the scene of the crucifixion, compared to the Italian masterpieces; Humor, together with Moldovita, Sucevita, Voronet and Arbore is unique in the Orthodox world for the interior and exterior Byzantine frescoes. Nevertheless life in the countryside of Bucovina is simple, traditions are well kept and the people are very hospitable, greeting strangers with joy and offering them a place to sleep simply because it is considered an Local life in Bucovinahonour to open one’s door to visitors and not for the financial gain. They are famous sheep and cow breeders; the old generations still wear the folk costume daily and believe in the return of their ancestors’ spirits during the winter holidays. This land has a magic about it that can’t be described; only experienced.
