The Carpathian Mountains
form an arc from the
Southern Ukraine to the
Danube River at the Iron
Gates.
The Carpathians are
rightfully named the
"Backbone" of Romania, and
this is easy to discover
once you have arrived.
Whichever activity you
choose to engulf yourself
in, the Carpathians offer
it, and with less tourist
exposure then the rest of
Europe, you will find
yourself alone with nature.
The hiking trails in
Romania offer some of the
most unspoiled treks in
Europe, if not the world.
Crossing the majority of the
ranges, you can hike from
one side of the country to
the other, and see others
only when choosing to do so.
The highest peak in Romania
is Mt. Moldoveanu at 2543M
in the Fagaras range,
located South East of Sibiu.
This summit is recommended
only if you are in good
physical condition, as it is
exposed, with lower
temperatures due to
altitude.
Cabanas scatter the trails,
which are a nice alternative
to camping when you are on
short overnight hikes. Most
of the Cabanas offer great
meals and drinks with low
prices.
Romania
is host to the most
important large carnivore
species in all of Europe;
Bear, Wolf and Lynx are wide
spread in the mountains;
however human interaction is
at a minimum with most. The
Bear population is healthy
here in part to Nicolae
Ceausescu, the Communist
dictator. He enjoyed bear
hunting so much that he
banned it country wide in
order for him and his party
members to have their fun.
These proved to beneficial
for all of Europe, as 1000’s
of Black bears now roam
Romania's forests.
The Carpathian's are not
limited to summer activity,
as nine separate ski resorts
play host to some of
Europe’s least crowded and
challenging slopes. The top
rated is Poiana Brasov,
located minutes from
Downtown Brasov. With some
great runs for advanced
skiers or boarders, the
remoteness of these slopes
will bring you back again.
Another
popular resort is Sinaia,
located less then one hour
from Brasov. The town of
Sinaia is a trendy resort
town, with great nightlife
and restauran ts. The ski
hill is smaller then Poiana
Brasov, but again boasts
some great runs, with very
few tourists.
Whatever your activity, The
Carpathian Mountains can
full fill your dream holiday.
