Craiova is located in
southwestern Romania, west
of Bucharest. This town is
steeped in history and
remains on an old settlement
of an ancient Roman Fortress
named Castra Nova. During
the Middle ages this was the
capital of Walachia. It was
here where one of the most
brilliant figures from that
era, “Michael the Brave”,
united the three Romanian
Kingdoms and started the Ban
of Craiova. During this time
the town prospered as the
central trading post of the
region. Today it is an
important cultural part of
the Country with a
university, a state
philharmonic orchestra and
theatre, and a rich regional
museum.
