Maramures, located in
Northern Transylvania, is
one of the few areas in this
part of the world that was
not dominated by the Romans.
Combine this with tougher
terrain that kept the
communist led systemization
of small villages out of
this region, and you will be
welcomed to a land that time
truly has forgotten.
The people here live a
unique lifestyle that has
been preserved for many
years. Wooden churches with
exquisite wooden sculptures
can be found scattered
through the mountains. The
ancient village of Sapanta
has become famous for its
Merry Cemetery; called this
because each grave stone
cross contains an
illustration and a poem
depicting the persons life
in a humorous way. The
crosses are carved in wood
by local artists and painted
blue. The cemetery is one of
the biggest attractions
world-wide among funeral
monuments.
