Northern Romania ~ Moldavia

Northern Romania ~ MoldaviaMoldova on the northern border was once part of this beautiful and historical region. It was in Suceava in the ancient court of Stephen the Great where the rulers were crowned. Of the 15th century Moldavia the largest part is located in Romania (45%), followed by The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. In the capital Iasi each ruler raised a monument and now the city is crowded with medieval churches, palaces, art exhibits and sculptures as a proud reminder of the culture. Other than its Medieval past Iasi is also regarded as the most romantic city in Romania. The hills, the parks, the lakes and the tranquil streets remind us why it is referred to as “the sweet town of Iasi”. Iasi PalaceThe Monastery of the Three Hierarchs, a true symphony of art built between 1637 and 1639 is famous for its exterior ornaments initially polished with gold, which combine Turkish, Arabic, Georgian, Armenian and Persian elements and Romanian architectural symbols, no two of which are the same; the church of Saint Nicholas, built between 1491 and 1492 by Stephen the Great, the oldest religious settlement still standing. Or Golia Monastery, built in the 16th century with a 30 meter high tower from which one can contemplate on the “city of the 7 hills”.

Northern Romania ~ MoldaviaThere to remind us of our great national poet Mihai Eminescu is the Copou Park with the tree which inspired him always. Next to it is the Mihai Eminescu Museum, a pious tribute brought to his genius. Iasi is also the home of the first memorial house, that of Ion Creanga, a classic of the Romanian literature, whose stories of childhood adventures are still passed on from generation to generation.

Another must visit is the monasteries in the Neamt such as Almas, Horaita, Bistrita or Pangarati, genuine artistic treasures surrounded by a magnificent landscape. In the heart of this Oak forest you can find a Bison reserve, the historic animal symbol of Moldavia.

Northern Romania ~ MoldaviaOnce the tallest construction in Piatra Neamt, Stephen the Great’s Tower is located in the northwest of St John’s church and together they represent the architectural complex also known as the “Royal Court”, a symbol of sentimental value. Due to its privileged location in the Eastern Carpathian Mountains, Piatra Neamt is considered one of the most picturesque cities in Romania, a real treasure of natural beauty.

It’s a part of Romania, not yet exploited at its real potential, but one that will remind the traveller of the bravery of its former kings, the genius of poets and writers and the tranquillity of Mother Nature, a source of energy and inspiration to all of us.
