The country’s hero town in
1989, Timisoara was where
the rebel against the
Communist regime of Nicolae
Ceausescu began. One of the
larger cities in Romania and
like most is steeped in
history. Over the years this
city has been influenced by
many other cultures. The
Romans used it as an
important fortress for
crossroads until the Tatars
destroyed it in the 13th
Century. After rebuilding
through the following years
it became an important
medieval commercial and
manufacturing town. Among
others to pass through and
occupy this area were the
Turks, Austrians, Germans,
and lastly the Serbs. Now
belonging to Romania these
past influences have created
communities through out the
city that get along side by
side in harmony.
From this past the city
prides itself in elegant
baroque squares, churches of
many faiths, an important
Jewish quarter, and a
pedestrian only city center.
There are a few monuments in
the city center where you
can have a panoramic view of
the city’s beautiful
architecture. There are also
many park and gardens to
stroll through. An important
tourist spot this is
definitely a must to add to
your itinerary.
