From
old monasteries to 20th
century busy towns, Walachia
is an inspired mix of old
and new. Home to the capital
city of Romania, Bucharest.
But other than metropolitan
locations this province has
a wide spread of nature and
towns that will take you
back to the times of
Dracula. Vlad
Tepes was a fierce protector
of this territory that
encountered many battles
with the Ottoman Turks. He
was the only leader in
history to free Walachia of
outside influences to rule
on their own. His story can
be told in many towns
through the province, each
with a captivating tale.
In the heart of Walachia,
spread on the hills south of
the Carpathians, is Oltenia,
since the 14th century, it
has been the center of this
southern Romanian kingdom. A
place of major importance,
politically,
as well as spiritually.
Across the centuries,
Walachian kings, as well as
local rulers, used this
beautiful natural setup to
build churches and establish
monasteries. These
Monasteries became an
important cultural center
because of the books printed
in most of these
monasteries, in the middle
Ages. Also, they were a
spiritual refuge for the
Romanian people during the
murky times when Walachia
had to fight for its
autonomy against the
powerful Ottoman Empire.
Walachia is also famous for
its renowned Herculane Spas,
called this because they say
Hercules himself used to
come here and enjoy the
famous mineral water
springs. The modern resort
at Herculane is beautifully
placed in majestic scenery,
and can be a great place to
relax away from the busy
towns. There are a number of
comfortable hotels,
restaurants and souvenir
shops, and the city square
proudly displays a large
statue of Hercules.
