After a few days in Budapest this tour starts from Cluj-Napoca; a great starting point from the northern part of the country, perfect for those continuing their tour from Hungary. Cluj is a great introduction to Transylvania; the main square is dominated by the magnificent gothic church of St. Michael, built by the Saxons in 14C, it is the biggest church in Romania.
After Cluj we start our journey to discover the unique medieval towns and castles of Transylvania. Today we will discover Hunyad Castle in Hunendoara. Once resided by Iancu de Hunedoara and an important stronghold. With its drawbridge, tall towers and high battlements you will see why this is one of the most magnificent castles in Romania. On the way we will stop in Alba Iulia.
The next day we will head to Sibiu which is the largest of the seven Saxon walled citadels of Transylvania. The historic center itself was declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site in 2004. It is reminiscent of medieval towns in Germany such as Nuremburg. On the way we will stop to visit Calnic Castle.
Another day filled with medieval towns and strongholds. We begin the day with a visit to Medias then continue to Biertan. Biertan Church is among one of the biggest of the Saxon fortified churches containing three interior wall. Finally reaching Sighisoara, one of the only still inhabited medieval citadels in Europe and the birthplace of Vlad Tepes, otherwise known as Dracula.
Next on the itinerary is the castles surrounding the Brasov county. Bran castle is considered the most picturesque castle in Romania and also known as Dracula's Castle; although it is debated he ever stepped foot in the castle. After we will visit the peasant fortress of Rasnov and return to the vibrant city of Brasov.
On the way to Bucharest we will stop to visit the Palace of Peles in Sinaia. Peles Castle was residence to the Royal family in Romania. Inside you will find an impressive collection of weapons from the middle ages.
